— I invite you to move slowly through these photos. The texts are written as a teaching tool for those who want to learn more about Feng Shui. - Our New Double Front Doors are Enhanced with Antique Chinese Screens and Lacquered a Bright Orange, a perfect balance of Old and New Chi. Feng Shui Medicine strives for balance in all things: Old/New, High/Low, Fast/Slow, Dark/Bright. Our vertical Cedar siding represents the Wood Element nourished by the deep blue/green color, Water Element. - Excellent for Career Chi. 2 Chinese Brooms represent Relationship Chi. Pairing in 2s symbolizes connected Relationship Chi.
4 Large Chinese Screens separate the Foyer from the Large Living Room. This large expanse with a vaulted ceiling creates speedy Chi, similar to a draft in the room, causing “on the go” energy. This speedy Chi makes it less likely to relax into meaningful heart-to-heart conversation, slow Chi, in the Living Room. The Chinese Screens slow down the Chi and the High Back on the Custom Sofa, with a single long, down-filled cushion cure the speedy Chi and create a restful spot for Relationship Chi to occur, so lacking in the world today. With Feng Shui Medicine meaningful relationship is caused by the space. The Acid Yellow Art with Yang chi, is especially welcome as we age. Art by Danielle O’Conner Akiyama. You will see a lot of Akiyama’s Art as you browse my Gallery. Everything an Artist Believes is Encoded within Her Art. Akiyama’s Art exudes Passion and Tranquillity. Every Item Emits A Message. I often recommend Akiyama’s art for messages of Passion, Power and Tranquility, attributes that are frequently missing in client’s lives.
Foyer Wall Art: Opposite the Front Double Doors, is our Spiritual Template. Upon entering we feel messages of Devotion, Relationship, Career and Wealth. Reflective floors with dark stain are Yin Chi balancing the expansive space and slanted ceiling, Yang Chi. The Large Chandelier counterbalances the downward draft of the stairwell and adds an abundance of Health Chi in the Health Gua.
Chi is Everywhere and in Every Thing. Every object we own creates a thought. Feng Shui Medicine utilizes beautiful design with messages that impact our thoughts and our future. Here Dominant Front Doors enhance our Career Chi. Brass Lotus Sconces reflect Devotional Chi. I use design to create thoughts that move us toward a life of fulfillment.
This "Campfire" Seating Arrangement encourages Relationship Chi. You know you have achieved an ideal arrangement when all the Seats are gathered in a Conversation. Relationship Chi has become a weak link in our culture, with people overly focused on their careers and electronics. “Campfire” seating facilitates empathy as people face each other, creating stronger relationships. Soft tactile fabrics encourage people to linger longer in conversation.
Feng Shui Medicine is Always Beautiful Design, but a beautiful design is not always good Feng Shui. With Feng Shui Medicine, we receive powerful messages through arrangement, shape and color, that course-correct our otherwise busy lives and cause us to return to what is enduring in our lives – relationship with ourselves and our loved ones. Feel the messages of Relationship, Intimacy and Love in this design with Uplifting and Calming Relationship Chi.
There are no absolute rules in Feng Shui Medicine. We follow the Chi. With Feng Shui Medicine, the Power Seats face the Entrance. However our Custom Sofa, designed with a high back (a Feng Shui Mountain), is turned away from the Entrance to face the messages in the large tranquil art which anchors the entire Living Room. The Pink Moroccan Rug and Acid Yellow Velvet Chairs continue the messages in the Art creating a flow that we want in Relationship Chi. The bright Moroccan rug against the gleaming dark floor delineates the Seating Group from the Dining and Piano areas that flank the spacious room. Art by James Leonard,
Our zen style Kitchen: The goal of our Kitchen design was Calm Chi. The Kitchen has a vaulted ceiling, speedy Chi. I tamed the upward movement of the vaulted ceiling by layering Grey Base Cabinets and Wood Upper Cabinets, creating a strong Horizontal design line. Horizontal lines are calming and Vertical lines are energizing. The woodgrain on the Upper Cabinets is also Horizontal, creating a Horizontal spin in the room. IF the Lower and Upper Cabinets were vertical woodgrain, the room would feel speedy, like an unsettling upward draft in the room. The beautiful Granite Farmhouse sink from Stone Forest.
Clean and Orderly.: This is a Less is More Kitchen, with no visible electrical outlets and no knobs or drawer pulls. Note the rounded corners, all 4” radius. This creates a calming feeling of ease by eliminating 90’ sharp corners that can be uncomfortable. Grain storage is beautiful in square glass air-tight containers. Pay attention to the inside of cupboards, drawers, refrigerators — these are the guts of your home where Health Chi resides. There is a direct relationship between our Bodies, our Minds and our Environments. Stagnant Chi in cupboards and drawers symbolizes stagnant Chi in bodies and cloudy thinking.
The cantilevered counter is a popular spot for Kitchen conversation. I chose adjustable air-pressure Bombo pedestal stools because of their simple silhouette. Imagine how cluttered it would feel with 4 legs on each stool and 1 leg under the counter. I chose 2 legs over 9 legs to keep the design simple and spacious.
Powder Room off the Living Room: I went all the way with playful design in this tiny 4’x4.5’ footprint. Note the repetitious color in the various elements: wallpaper, petrified wood sink, custom design marble counter, backsplash and soap dish. Even the inside door is wallpapered! - a Chiful wonderland!
Powder Room: The counter, backsplash and soap-dish are custom designed to fit this very narrow space. The design materials are a homage to Nature, a sensuous delight. You can tell when something has lots of Chi, it takes your breath away.
Master Bedroom: This is a custom bed upholstered in a water green silk velvet, to match the wall color. The custom lampshades are the same water green color. This monochromatic room creates slow sleeping Chi. The antique Japanese side tables were painted the palest pink. It’s a bit of Heaven.
Old World Charm: The entire bathroom is wrapped in St. Germain stone walls, laid by David. The chair, facing the tub, encourages peaceful evening conversations. The gorgeous floor-to-ceiling heavy embroidered drape hangs from a hospital curtain rod - mounted flush with the tiled ceiling - and is drawn to create a small intimate bathing area. The custom Venetian Chandelier is perfect for this space. We created a shelf for bath salts and installed extra heating in that wall for long soaks.
Although the Master Bathroom is new, it feels like we are stepping into an Old World. The Vanity walls are Pink Portuguese Marble with 3 inset medicine cabinets that serve as mirrors. The custom Cabinet with ball feet was built to look like an old French dresser. This is a serene bathroom flowing off the serene Master Bedroom.
At the Master Bathroom Vanity, I increased the width of the counter by recessing 6” of the side walls, The Carrara Marble sink is from Kohler. Little touches - cross handles on the spigot, antique sconces, wall soap dish, antique linen towels - make the space feel charmed.
Lower Level TV Room: Note how the Custom Edelman leather sectional (designed by me and built by McGilligans) floats over the margin at the carpet/slate. This little trick visually enlarges the carpeted area. The upper section of the Custom TV cabinet is black to camouflage the black tv. The message in Danielle O’Connor Akiyama’s large painting exudes Joy Chi.
Lower Level Office: When we built this addition, David extended the heated floor with beautiful black slate tiles in a flowing pattern ending at the center of the sliding glass door, and a grid of small travertine mosaic tiles. The grid design, all in straight lines, is like ledger paper, creating a clear mind for the task of office work. Less is More: we created storage for our Library, Printer and Files behind Japanese Shoji sliding screens. Everything is put away to facilitate an uncluttered mind.
Storage: These Japanese Shoji Screens, by eshoji.com, with horizontal and vertical lines replicate the grid design in the travertine tiles and contribute to a quiet orderly mind in our Home Office. In the evenings, the rice paper on the Shoji Screens glows: we installed tube fluorescent lighting inside the closet. It’s serenely Quiet Chi.
Home Office Desk: A labor of Love — We designed and built a Chiful desk for 2, of cypress slabs from fallen trees on Whidby Island. The slabs are supported by 3 walnut plinths, with electric in the center plinth for our laptops. The wood pendants and Eames chairs, both with linear design, are from DWR. Linear design in the office enhances a clear mind for the tasks at hand.
3/4 Bath: This is our Lower Level Bath with a low ceiling, which is cured by the wall-to-wall mirror and 5 brass surface-mounted sconces from cb2. We eliminated a vanity cabinet to enlarge the footprint. The beautiful heavily textured square mosaic tiles - on 1 wall and the floor - are from the Old City of Jerusalem, by Ann Sacks. The ceiling and remaining bathroom walls are tiled in a simple cream colored porcelain tile that gives center stage to the Jerusalem tiles.
3/4 Bath: The simplicity of this brass spigot, the flowing shape of the onyx sink and the travertine counter create a textural sensation with the Jerusalem tiles and Less is More feeling in this small room. The sink is from Signature Hardware. The fixtures are Kohler.
3/4 Bath: I often design nooks in the shower area for shampoos. In this bathroom with so little wall space, I installed a towel bar under the shower spigot to hold a drying floor mat. In designing bathrooms, the placement of towel bars and hooks becomes part of the overall design for good Chi flow. The shower curtain, without a plastic liner, is a nylon mesh that is weighted at the bottom edge and held back with brass curtain tie-backs found on Etsy.
Our Back Patio Deck with harmonious Relationship Chi. The sofa is backed with a vertical screen, creating a wall — a feng shui mountain. The deck overlooks a beautiful vibrant shade garden. Here every design choice – sofa with rugs, table cloth, lambskin draped chairs, antique bowls – encourages lingering relaxation. Our cultural dis-ease is Speed. The design of our Patio Deck offers Feng Shui Medicine for Speedy Chi. You can feel the call to relax and relate.
By adding 5 new Vertical Windows, an auspicious number for Health Chi, we visually balanced the Horizontal Ranch Home Silhouette. Simple Natural Textures abound in this zen Environment.
Living Room: The “Campfire” seating arrangement creates Relationship Chi. The Purple Moroccan Rug and Octagonal glass coffee table both represent Wealth Chi. Octagons are the shape of the Bagua, the Feng Shui Map, which represents fullness in All areas of Life. We anchored the sitting space by adding 2 skylights. The glass table lightens the feeling and allows the rug to dominate the space. Imagine a Wood table and feel the difference. Every Choice Matters!
7 Natural Alabaster Sconces placed at the same height encircle the Living Room creating cozy Relaxing Chi. Feel the balance of the linear movement in the wallpaper (vertical and horizontal), sconce shape (vertical) and alabaster tiles (horizontal). Feng Shui Medicine is all about Balance: too much Vertical motion creates restlessness, while too much Horizontal motion creates slothfulness. Phillip Jeffries wallpaper
Feel how the Purple Moroccan Rug placed on the diagonal keeps the energy flowing. The room would feel static if the rug and furniture were parallel to the walls. This flows!
Floor to Ceiling Walnut Cabinets add visual height to 8’ ceilings. The addition of 2 skylights lifts the energy even more.
All Cabinets and Yellow Glass Mosaic Tiles go to Ceiling Height, adding visual height, clean lines and simplicity. The Center Island with Walnut Counter adds warmth to the colder surfaces of the Kitchen. 3 bright Pendants add to Health Chi
Feng Shui Kitchen design should be symbolic of strong Health Chi and invoke stability. Strong Color - this acid Yellow - symbolizes vitality, Yang Chi - and the Square tile shape symbolizes stability. We eliminated a granite backsplash and covered the entire wall with beautiful glass mosaic tiles, a clean simple feeling. Note how we minimized the outlets by lowering them and turning them on their side.
Natural Elements mixed with one bright color creates a High Chi zen Environment. Note how simple the lines are – no curvaceous lines in this zen environment.
Keeping it Simple with 1 Big chi Hit. The Acid Yellow Wallpaper and the Acid Yellow Glass Mosaic Tiles balance the Opposite Walls of this Large Kitchen area, like a Barbell. Feel the Serenity created by the bare side walls and the horizontal lines in the cable wire railings. Like good art, you have to know when to Stop!
Half Bath: a Custom Wall Hung Vanity increases the footprint of this small room and 3 spacious mirrors topped with a beautiful glass Sconce circulate the energy and create maximum Chi flow.
The subtle textures of the Natural Onyx Vessel, the gold flecked granite counter, the gold/brown hemp wallpaper and the wood waste basket are soothing. This vessel and wall-mount faucet is a study in simplicity.
Elements of Nature: Phillip Jeffries Hemp Wallpaper with glistening gold tones and Wood Wastebasket
Monochromatic Master Suite: Wall Hung Vanity enlarges the footprint of the Bathroom. Hers/His zen style square granite vessels are a perfect choice in this elegant linear design. Feel how the strong horizontal lines relax the energy. The expansive Mirror creates flow for the whole Master Suite.
Monochromatic Master Suite: At the entrance to the bedroom, natural Carrara Marble tile on the Right wall and Jim Thompson Asian print wallpaper on the Left create tonal and textural Elegant chi.
Monochromatic Master Suite: Textural and Natural Elements with little color create Relaxing Chi. Feel the balance at the Entrance to the sleeping space with a Flowing wallpaper design on the Left - Feminine Yin Energy, and Linear tile design on the Right - Male Yang Energy. Feng Shui Medicine is about creating Feelings, not Thoughts. What do you Feel as you imagine stepping into this space?
Monochromatic Master Suite: Custom White Washed Barn Doors on the Master Closet feel like art. Danielle O’Connor Akiyama art
Monochromatic Master Suite: This is a Natural Selenite stone sconce on Carrara marble field tiles, so beautiful! Feel the calming energy. Selenite is known for clearing Energy
Monochromatic Master Suite: One simple curve in the Double Size Slipper Copper Tub feels serene under the mirror backed Asian Screen. Serenity Chi.
Monochromatic Master Suite: All Surfaces of the Shower are tiled: Carrara marble ceiling and walls with ceramic plank floor tiles. I prefer to tile bathroom ceilings, it feels clean. To eliminate clutter, we created recessed Nooks in the Walls for shampoos.
Staircase Design: This Wide Open U Shaped Staircase with a generous landing flows like a river. This is the best Feng Shui for moving to another Level. An L shape staircase is second best. A straight line staircase with speedy Chi should be avoided if possible. Avoid spiral staircases. Avoid triangular treads. I carpet the stair Treads edge-to-edge for a wider feeling, and leave the stair Risers in wood, for less bulk.
Lower Level Bedrooms: We Maximized the Chi flow with opaque glass double doors to each Bedroom, inviting natural light into the Central area that has no windows. Here the Feng Shui Medicine is to lift the Lower Level Chi to the same frequency as the Upper Level Chi. Lower Levels have less Chi because they are Lower, requiring design choices I may not choose on Upper Levels. How would it feel standing here if these bedrooms had single white wood doors?
Double Bathroom: The playfulness in the Capiz Shell Chandelier, Shell frames on the Mirrors and gentle curve in the white Vessels balances the abundance of straight lines. We tiled all the surfaces — Walls-Floor-Ceiling. The wall-hung Vanity maximizes the spacious, clean feeling of this Bathroom Chi.
Balance: Turquoise glass mosaic tiles balance two opposing walls, this Tub Wall and the Shower Wall at the opposite end of the room. I call this strong balance a Barbell. — Whenever I have the space, I add a soft chair to the bathroom setting. This velvet upholstery is a welcome touch and invites conversation.
4 Complementary Tiles create textural interest: Most of the walls are Glossy-Grey-Rectangular field tiles. The only color is the Square- Turquoise-Glass-Mosaic Accent Tiles on the 2 opposing Walls. 12” square Ceiling tiles are matt-grey. Floor tiles are 36” rectangular-matt-planks. Note the flecks of turquoise in the Counter. Little Details are really Big Details!
Living Room: The Home Owner is a Musician and the Piano takes the Power Seat. That means the Piano is facing all the motion in the Home. I have been a piano teacher since 1977, and always advise that when a student is seated at the piano, they must be able to see the action in the room or they will not sit for long. In the case of an upright Grand piano, this can be accomplished by placing a mirror above/near a piano that is facing a wall.
I have know this client for years as my piano student. When she called for Feng Shui, she wanted to limit the redesign to a New Kitchen. When the Kitchen transformation was completed, the Chi frequency was palpably distinct from the rest of the home and within the next 6 months, the entire home was radically transformed. I call this - The Better It Gets, The Better It Gets. —The linear design in this orange/grey Rug directs the Energy from the Foyer to the Seating Area. We replaced the old wall-to-wall carpeting - Stagnant Chi - with fresh Bamboo Flooring - Vibrant Chi.
Basic bright primary colors, Red-Blue-Yellow, anchor this home in Joy Chi. Deep blue walls at the far end of the room create a Feng Shui Mountain, strongly supporting the other bright colors. Sense into how the space would feel without the deep blue walls. The deep color creates a stable Feng Shui design. The Colorful Wool Rugs are from cb2. Nature Photo Art by the Home Owner. See Before/After Gallery.
2 Sofas (Red and Blue) and 2 tables (Blue and Red) facing each other, create strong Relationship Chi and great Feng Shui Balance.
Dining Area: the Globe Pendant disperses energy to the adjacent spaces. Mirror doubles the light and size of the room and keeps the Chi flowing. Bold Circles in the reupholstered dining chairs and the Pendant Globes balance the Linear design of the Living Room. The Wall art from cb2.
Remodeled Kitchen: From Chaos to Order — in this 7 sided Angular Room with a Pitched Ceiling, the sink Was under the Far Left window and the stove Was on the opposite diagonal wall. By relocating the sink to directly under the Peaked Center Window, we created a “chiropractic adjustment”. Now your body can feel Balanced while standing in this unusual shape. The Overall Balance was achieved with a monochromatic palate of All-White Cabinets and White Tiled Walls. She had planned on Cherry cabinets, but that would have added to the chaos of the 7 sided room with an pitched ceiling. The new Monochromatic Kitchen balances the Bright Basic Colors of the adjacent spaces. Note: We removed old Oak Window Trim on the Large Kitchen Windows to reveal the Clean Lines . Feel how it lifts the Chi. See in Before/After Gallery
3/4 Bath: This is a renovation masterpiece, see in Before/After Gallery, What’s new? the wall-to-wall mirror, the floor-to-ceiling tiles, and white fixtures. We removed an old oak vanity cabinet that prohibited the door from fully opening and installed this sleek beautiful pedestal sink. Note: the height of the towel bars, nice.
Guest Room: Wow! This unsettled room shape with busy architecture – different window sizes and lots of angles – is downplayed by spectacular COLOR! When you have features that you are not going to change (the walls and ceilings in this room) you play your trump card using Big Color. The result is that your attention goes to the color, not the busy architecture. Know when to splash out!
Foyer: We are looking into the Foyer where we hung 6 Travel photos of memorable vacations they took. The Bagua, Feng Shui Map, has 9 sections or 9 Guas; each Gua is associated with a number and the number in the Travel Gua is 6. The Foyer located in the Travel Gua of the Home, designed with 6 beautiful photos of their travels, increasing the likelihood of many travels to come. — Radiating convex Sun Mirror disperses energy in all directions
When coming home they used their Side Entrance, a narrow path leading to a small door. We transformed their everyday path to a flowing walkway, a pooling patio and a dynamic Glass Octagonal Foyer. Feel the movement of a stream in the gently curving path. I turned the Bagua - the Feng Shui map - by moving the Career Gua, from the Front (street side) of the home to their EveryDay side entrance. This is possible with Advanced Feng Shui Medicine by creating strong lines in the path that lead to a Powerful Modern Focal Point. Note how the strong New Chi uplifts the Old Chi in this Country setting. — Donkeys, horses, cats and peacocks roam the grounds, a Loving environment. See Before/After Gallery for the complete transformation.
The Ceiling of the Domed Octagonal Foyer is mirrored, Water Element, reflecting the prismatic crystal Chandelier, more Water Element flowing in every direction. Water Element is great Wealth Chi in the Career Gua. This is as auspicious as it gets! See it before the mirror installation in Before/After Gallery. Chandelier from Restoration Hardware
Cheerful Chi abounds in this vibrant Kitchen. Note – For the kitchen counter we created a separate eating area by using 2 colors of Corian, blue for eating and green for food prep.
Great Room: We removed a wall to create a family space combining the Kitchen and Living Room. This welcoming Great Room with many patterns in blue, orange and green represents the bounty of life. This is not a Less-Is-More home. This is a great example of Balanced Joyful chi.
Bountiful Chi everywhere! Flowing patterns, Female Yin Energy, balance with Stripes and Plaids, Male Yang Energy. Extra wide crown molding wraps around the entire Great Room, grounding the space. Modern fabrics, coffee table and art balance the relationship of Old Chi and New Chi. When the home is Old, install modern things; when the home is New, use some heavy antiques. Feel how this balances the relationship of Old and New. Danielle O’Connor Akiyama art
Breakfast Nook: Reupholstered antique high Wingback Chairs create a feeling of intimacy, wonderful Relationship Chi. The silk fabrics are a balance of flowing female Patterns, Yin, and linear male Stripes, Yang. See in Custom Furniture Gallery.
When it came time to remodel the Family Room we installed a heated stone floor and created continuity of design by connecting to the Great Room with a second plaid wallpapered ceiling and Tiffany Chandelier. The Large Brass Cranes (cranes mate for Life) in the Power Position of the room are a symbol of loving Relationship Chi.
Cozy Master Bedroom with Custom Silk Headboard – 2 Bedside Tables, 2 Lamps, 2 Chandeliers – all in pairs for good Relationship Chi. Master Bedrooms should always celebrate the relationship of Two by balancing the Bed with equal Chi on both sides, like a level teeter totter. Neither side of the bed should have dominate energy. Ideally, bedrooms are for rebuilding our Chi while sleeping and for our intimate relationships. Libraries, work-out space, desks and paperwork should be allocated to other rooms.
Copper Tub with Mosaic turquoise glass tile – Water Chi, and Brown Damask Wallpaper – Earth Chi, 2 Feng Shui Elements that balance each other.
Control Cycle of Elements: This is a great example of the Control Cycle, Metal-chops-Wood. Metal Elements can be grey or white, circular or oval, stone-marble or metal. Here the Metal Element occurs in the grey sectional sofa, grey poofs shaped like large smooth pebbles, marble tables, circular shapes, white chairs and grey walls. The Wood Element occurs in the flooring, dining table, pendants, art and flowers. Designing with this Control Cycle – Metal-chops-Wood – creates an elegant zen environment. See the 5 Elements Chart under Consultation for more information.
This is a sophisticated remodel transforming a traditional 50s home into a Scandinavian design that she Loves. We began by Removing heavy crown molding, Installing more windows, Removing the fireplace hearth and Covering the gold brick fireplace with floor-to-ceiling simple grey Ceramic tiles laid horizontally. The 5 wood pendants, for Health Chi and the sleek white chairs announce – Less Is More. Pendants from Crate & Barrel. See in Before/After Gallery.
We chose One elegant long Sectional Sofa over several separate seats. Feel the strong linear relationship between the dining table and the sectional sofa and how they are softened by the circular objects.
Sleek Vertical Lines: Upon entering, the Foyer introduces the Control Cycle, Metal-Chops-Wood. We achieved a clean spare feeling with no frills using 3 materials: Wood, Grey Tiles, and Black Tiles. The grey tiles and the Maple wood run from Floor-to-Ceiling, covering all existing drywall with Maple matching the custom tall Coat Closet doors. We extended the black floor tiles to the margins of the Living Room and Kitchen. Previously there was a smaller patch of terra-cotta tiles that served as a doormat and didn’t flow into the rooms. The Black Slate Tiles create strong lines that invite Chi to circulate into the home. See in Before/After Gallery.
Kitchen: Rectangular white glass Mosaic tiles cover the kitchen walls to the ceiling and extend the Living Room elegance into the Kitchen. Feel how the horizontal lines in the glass tiles balance the vertical lines of the wood cabinets. Natural Black Stone knobs feel grounding in the hand. See the contrast in the Before/After Gallery.
This very small room is made beautiful by the vertical lines in the Birch tree wallpaper, the elimination of a vanity and the very small wall-hung sink. The up-down directional wallpaper is good Feng Shui for this small bathroom in the center of the Bagua, the Health Gua.
Great Room: Remodeled for Light and Flow, we added 3 Skylights in the Fame Gua. The 5 vertically aligned Wall Sconces for strong Health Chi, replace a simple pendant to light the path to the Lower Level. A Sparkling Glass Brick half-wall replaces a traditional drywall half-wall. Feel how the Star Burst Chandelier disperses energy throughout the space. Imagine it as a pendant with a large shade and feel the difference. Here lighting is used to enhance the Chi and the Bagua.
In Feng Shui Medicine, pay attention to the subtle feelings in your body. You body innately understands what your mind cannot. Balancing Horizontal, Vertical and Diagonal Lines: By inserting the Glass Brick Horizontal Line high on the cobalt wall, we strengthened the stable line of the Glass Brick half-wall. This counterbalances the Vertical Lighting and the Diagonal stairway descent, as well as pulls light into the adjacent room. When the space is Balanced it feels quiet in your body.
In Feng Shui Medicine, Balance means - Not Too Much, Not Too Little. Feel the strength of the Vertical and Horizontal lines that stabilize the motion in the vaulted ceiling. Power Chi and Relationship Chi are created by 2 Joyful art works by Dennis Davis.
In Feng Shui Medicine Great Rooms – Kitchen-Dining-Living areas blend together to create a cohesive relaxed feeling. (When these rooms are separated by walls, there is less demand for a flowing design.) Here the Kitchen Area of the Great Room is dressed up with high gloss piano-finish Upper Cabinets by Neff. The Akiyama art and the Curved counter are in Relationship with the Dining and Living Areas, creating messages for Relationship Chi for the Home Owners.
Spacious Great Room: wrap-around Windows and Deep Verdant Green walls blur the lines between interior environments and Nature - creating Good Health Chi
In the Dining Area, located in the Wealth gua of the Home, we installed a Chandelier Dripping with Crystals (Water Element) for Wealth Chi in the Wealth gua.
Jane was my apprentice for several years and that relationship continues, as our understanding of Chi is never finished. Her Foyer covers the entire Feng Shui Bagua: Career Chi is augmented with a large Mirror. Relationship Chi, Health Chi and Wealth Chi are all represented in the 2 matching antique Chandeliers. Jim Thompson Wallpaper, depicting Animals in Pairs, is for Relationship Chi and Travel Chi. On the back wall, Plum paint is for Fame Chi. Every gua of the Bagua is represented in her Entrance. See my Apprentices in About Jackie
Jane’s Home Office: In designing for Wealth Chi, we use the Creative Cycle of Elements, Water-Feeds-Wood. (Wood is the element in the Wealth corner of the Bagua.) The Water Elements represented here are the Crystal Chandelier, dripping with water energy, located over a Glass Desk with a Deep Blue Ceiling overhead. Power Chi radiates from the Red Sofa. Exquisite Color design!
Kitchen: We wrapped the Jim Thompson -Arun- wallpaper around the corner from the Foyer to the upper kitchen walls, inviting the Chi all the way into the home.
Jane’s Great Room: We decided to place a new sectional sofa at the “designated” spot for a dining area (designated by a pendant that we removed) and place the Dining Area near the fireplace. Her home is graced with art by Marco Spalatin, a personal friend.
Soothing Guest Bath: Marko Spalatin Art hangs on Cole & Son Woods Wallpaper. When a condominium is not on the Ground Level, it is good Feng Shui Medicine to bring Nature into the design.
Master Bedroom: Romance Blossoms over the bed in a beautiful mural from Anthropologie. Dark Chocolate colored walls puts the emphasis on the Bed. Bedside tables and Chandeliers are in pairs for Relationship Chi.
Foyer: Black 24” Tile Flooring is Water Element for Career Chi. The Round Chandelier is Welcoming Chi for the many gatherings in this home. This couple practices yoga and the vibrant tree painting represents good health and a straight spine. Feel the exuberant Chi of Orange!
In 2015, while they vacationed in Asia for a month, we remodeled the Living Room. See Before/After Gallery. The old Living Room was split in 2 levels with wall-to-wall carpeting on the lower floor and tile on the upper floor, 2 steps up . We remodeled the floor creating one level that flows into the adjacent kitchen, all in beautiful hickory flooring. We removed an upright post that supported the second story and installed a steel beam across the length of the flat ceiling. — The Passive Solar ceiling is very angular; we installed 18 dimmable pendants from cb2, at 3 different heights from the floor, to cure the steep angle. 9 represents Everything in Feng Shui - we installed 9 pendants for Her and 9 for Him.
This long rectangular room is balanced with a 13’ Custom Sofa, variable height pendants, strong art, Custom Ottoman, Custom Bench, and large plants. Art by James Leonard and Danielle O’Connor Akiyama,
Artful Furniture: Custom Velvet Sofa with 9 Custom pillows and an irresistible Custom Ottoman with Icelandic Sheep top. 3 Martini tables from West Elm are easily movable to other positions in the room.
Custom 13’ velvet Sofa with 9 Custom Pillows. Sofa arms are trapezoidal shaped. I am fortunate to work with McGilligans who expertly craft anything that I design!
To place these 18 lights in a random pattern that would resemble twinkling stars when the bulbs were dimmed, I marked 3 different heights on the side wall and 18 spots on the floor with blue painters tape. I asked Jay, of Larkwood Builders, to install the lights over the marks on the floor and vary the heights. Stunning results!
Kitchen: We designed and remodeled this fabulous kitchen 2 years before the Living Room remodel. Gorgeous hickory flooring combines with Neff cherry (pillowed and piano-finished) Cabinets. The ribbed base cabinets and refrigerator have an iridescent finish. Both the long granite counter and the kitchen island are terminated with matching gentle curves, which feel kind to your body when moving about. This kitchen is a dream for cooking, which they do 3 times a day! Notice the round metal art. I love to place art in the kitchen.
Feng Shui Medicine causes Feelings in your Body. Step into this photo — feel the kindness of the gentle curve, the aliveness in the reflection of the piano finish and the harmony in the mix of woods – hickory flooring and cherry cabinets. Gracefully curved Green Glass counter welcomes conversation while cooking at the induction range. It’s very good Feng Shui Medicine for the cook to face the guests. I designed everything around her choice of cabinet – pillowed cherry wood with a piano-finish that glistens.
Great Room: 2 large Curved Sofas seem to embrace each other creating Relationship Chi. We covered two walls in black natural Slate tiles. Feel the Vertical strength, Power and Wealth Chi, of the two Floor-Ceiling Slate walls that camouflage the black fireplace insert. Without the black slate tiles, we would be visually drawn to the black rectangular shape of the fireplace in the Power Point of the Great Room. Now the fireplace visually disappears and the energy is in the conversation between the two large curved sofas. The Power Point is the position directly opposite the main entrance to a space. If you are a student of Feng Shui, don’t try to determine any rules from my designs, just feel how I am constantly creating primary Relationship Chi, and secondary Wealth Chi and Health Chi.
Graceful Curves: Note all the curves, Sofa-Chandelier-Stool and Coffee Table; this is Relationship Chi. How would it feel with a straight sofa and rectangular coffee table? When we look outside at the view of endless straight lines, these curves become a breath of fresh air. Feel the subtle Global embrace of the Moroccan style pendant and Chinese ceramic stool. Small art treasures create a Chiful impact as One large grouping and form a Feng Shui Mountain being the sofa.
This beautiful Black Billiard Table Light over the Kitchen Island, along with the Moroccan pendant in the Seating Area, balance the entire Great Room. Granite backsplash covers the entire wall above kitchen counter, creating a polished Kitchen that flows seamlessly with the beauty of the Large Great Room. Feel the Power Chi in the deep colors that hold the space, giving it presence and a grounded feeling on the 3rd floor of this complex. Fixture from Rejuvenation.
Dining Area: Black marble Saarinen pedestal table, Bagua Greek style mirror, vertical collection of Russian plates, Scandinavian pendant. Feel the Balance, Simplicity and the Global embrace. When an object is 8 sided, we say it represents the Bagua, the map of placement used in Feng Shui. The Bagua represents having balance in all of Life.
In Traditional Tri-Level Homes, the Entrance is Not on the Main Lavel and is Split by stairways going Up and Down, creating Indecision upon entering at the Career Gua. In addition to this, there Was a coat closet blocking this view of the Front Door. These are major Feng Shui Career Chi Problems! To cure the structural career issues, I designed a new Glass Front Door with a Large Window directly above the Door and removed the coat closet, thereby enlarging the Mouth of Chi, at the Career Gua. These structural changes create a flowing interaction with the Outside World, creating great Career chi. The Sputnik Chandelier from Restoration Hardware disperses energy in All directions and is visible from the street, welcoming in even more Career Chi.
This modern feeling is achieved on the 5 Elements Control Cycle: Metal Energy (White) Controls Wood Energy (Wood). We removed the drywall railings and installed a Cable Railing System to open the view and allow more Chi to flow to the Main Level. Stairs are tiled with Black Slate representing the Water Element, another Career Chi enhancement.
Another Major Understanding of Feng Shui Medicine: Every Thing Causes a Thought. Simplicity of Design helps clear the Mind. Feel the Strong Alignment in the Natural Black Real Stone Knobs.
Water Element is Present in the discretionary use of Black. Feel the Power Chi in the Floor-to-Ceiling Cabinets. When designing Kitchens with Upper Cabinets, go all the way to the ceiling. Stopping short creates a Chi trap, where stagnant energy gathers. The Vertical strength in going all the way to the ceiling is empowering. Feel it.
Splash Out on a Big Chi Hit like this Lovely Curved Glass Chandelier from The Home Depot, for the Dining Area. Glass (Water Element), Light (Fire Element), Curves (Metal Element) - all in one Fixture!
The 7’ Wall separating the Foyer from the Living Room creates a Strong Horizontal Line (Earth Element) and invites chi into the Living Room. This wall was a half-wall before the remodel.
Glass shower wall, Mirror, large Tiles, and wall-hung Vanity create a Spacious Feeling in this Small 3/4 Bathroom.
In Small Bathrooms, the More Mirror, the Better. To double the light, mount the fixture on top of the mirror.
Irresistible Gathering Space: The singular most important design in Feng Shui Medicine is CAMPFIRE SEATING. One of the most beneficial services of Feng Shui Medicine is causing others to Sit-Down-and-Relate. Here it feels like you are entering a sanctuary. This beautiful “Campfire” arrangement with 40s style seating in Purple Velvet is anchored by an Oriental rug and embellished with Chi Hits - Chinese tables, a gigantic verdant palm and plum colored walls. All 5 Elements are present: Fire - tall windows bring in the sunlight, stove, Earth - the Square feeling of the total arrangement, Metal - strong vertical stovepipe and the round tables, Water - purple, Wood - the graceful Palm, several tables, and wood flooring. The integration of all 5 Elements gives the space a feeling of Wholeness, All Is Well In The World!
Their love of Nature is reflected in paintings of cows, pigs and farmlands, a down-to-Earth collection we used to “wallpaper” and anchor the Great Room. Feel how gently the curved corner of the sofa embraces the entire space and imagine it as a 90’ corner. You can introduce softness into a space by adding a beautiful curve to the mix.
Those Greens! He Loves that Green Canopy Ceiling because it pulls him into Nature! Imagine the boredom of a white ceiling in this Great Room. The deep, almost black, green of the fireplace camouflages the black fireplace box and creates a strong Vertical Power structure in the Power Point of the Great Room. The pre-existing White Baseboards felt weak, so we painted all of them a deep sharkskin Green, drawing a contiguous line throughout the entire 2 story condo.
Her Office: This upbeat Chartreuse color complements the luscious Green ceiling of the adjacent Great Room and it’s the perfect backdrop for their heart-warming rural America art collection. White marble pedestal Saarinen table and Tulip chairs with orange seats work perfectly with the wall color.
This young couple needed Joy Chi and they got it in spades! We wallpapered a long wall with happy monkeys and brought in the Pink! On a budget, we hung 2 Craig’s List chandeliers over the pine dining table that her dad made. We splurged on a leather sectional sofa for him. Love is in the Air; you can feel it! You don’t need a million dollars to lift the Chi. Even kitty feels the difference!
Kitchen Remodel: Several years later, when they were expecting their baby boy, it was time to remodel the Kitchen. We did this entire fabulous kitchen on a $10,000 budget: floor-to-ceiling piano finish Ikea Cabinets, yellow glass Mosaic Tiles to the ceiling, a Kitchen island, new flooring and new appliances! So beautiful and upbeat!
Kitchen Island: She sourced this beautiful granite to blend with the mosaic yellow glass tiled walls. The shiny piano finish makes the kitchen sparkle with Health Chi.
Kitchen: We rescued an old chair with 3 beautiful fabrics and created a cozy spot near the busy kitchen where he cooks. Her mother painted the playful art. The addition of a Soft Chair, Rug and Art blurs the lines between Kitchen Chi and Living Room Chi.
Happy Baby Room: What a beautiful scene! She said that when he was fussy as a tiny baby, she would bring him into this room and he would calm down and look all around. The mural is from Anthropologie. We reupholstered the rocking chair with a Bee and a Butterfly. We laid shag carpeting wall-to-wall.
Happy Baby Room and Mom’s Office: At the other end of the room nestled between floor-to-ceiling Ikea cabinets, which hold his baby clothes and her office supplies, is her desk in the Power Position of the home, looking toward the front Street. Good Career Chi for mom.
Great Room: The Sun is the source of Greatest Chi, giving life to Earth; we crave sunlight. With little natural light in a condominium, Feng Shui Medicine uses an abundance of Mirrors and Glass to Lift the Chi and expand the space. See how the Glass coffee table and mirrored discs bring in more light? Feel the Relationship Embrace of the Sofa on the Diagonal. Simply rearranging furniture and wall art can transform a space, causing people to relax and breathe more fully. Mirror from Ballard Designs.
Dining Area: Feel the magnetism of the Orange art by Danielle O’Connor Akiyama, Big Chi Hit. A Chi Hit draws you into the space, circulating the energy. Imagine the Dining Area without that Akiyama! The trellis wallpaper on the opposite walls adds motion to areas with slow Chi and anchors the space.
Mirrors and Light Cure a space with little natural light. The contrast of the Brass Accents on the Mirrors and Branch Chandelier with deep Plum Paint is auspicious for Wealth Chi. In Feng Shui Medicine all design choices are significant for the enhancement of 3 basic categories of Chi: Health Chi, Wealth Chi and Relationship Chi. Specific enhancements occurs in numbers, colors, materials, and placement. Become sensitive to the feelings in your body when you are Still. Standing in different areas you will discern when the Chi is flowing, or speedy (too fast) or stagnant (too slow). Not Too Fast - Not Too Slow. Only flowing Chi is beneficial.
This Kitchen was blocked by a narrow opening causing Chi to stagnate. This wider opening with plum paint flowing into Plum/Gold Mosaic tiles creates a seamless extension of the Great Room. When we create more flow between rooms, it strengthens a sense of connection within ourselves. Culturally, we are draining our Chi with over connection to the business of the World. Feng Shui Medicine directly affects our psyche and offers a cure. See Before/After Gallery.
New Ikea Wall Cabinets go to the ceiling, lifting the energy (the old soffits were removed). Metal legs lift the Base Cabinets off the floor, creating a feeling of Spaciousness with shiny new floors extending under the base cabinets. Every aspect of design is done for uplifting the chi. It is not only beautiful, you can feel it in your body and thought processes. Old ways of thinking begin to disappear.
Plum Brown Tiles with Gold highlights and the silhouette of the Brass Gooseneck Faucet create elegant Wealth Chi. There are many brass highlights flowing through the Great Room and Kitchen, creating Wealth Chi.
The Square Oak Table with Modern Brass Chandelier and Upbeat Gallery, enliven the Breakfast nook.
Living Room: Beautiful Paneling shines and becomes a Feng Shui Mountain for the curved Natuzzi velvet sofa in a “Campfire” seating arrangement. Dull wood soaks up light and lowers the Chi, however this high shine raises the Chi. Feel how the Orange ceiling helps to embrace the room. Imagine if the ceiling were white and feel the difference. The Power Art is by Dennis Davis.
Dining Room: Sit yourself down at a dining chair and feel how the deep Cobalt Ceiling lifts the Chi and energizes you. Then imagine it as a white ceiling. This room is a magnet for relaxing dinners. Fire -the slanted ceiling. Earth - the brick wall and yellow wall. Metal - the iron chandelier. Water - cobalt ceiling and crystals on chandelier. Wood - that’s obvious. The Power Art is by Dennis David.
Living Room: This young man bought his first home - a 2 story gold brick 50’s, in an established neighborhood - with the vision of starting a family. I wanted to help him create an exciting bachelor’s pad with an eye toward a future family. From our first meeting, everything was spoken with great intention for his future. This is a whole house renovation. Blue-Blue-Blue: Wallpaper by Osborne&Little, Marmara, depicts flowing waves in dramatic tones of Blue, Gorgeous Blue velvet sectional from cb2, distressed Blue wool rug. The drapes go to the ceiling. We painted all the woodwork in a shiny deep slate color - just beautiful!
Kitchen: We gutted the Kitchen - removed the Upper Cabinets in favor of Open Shelving, installed all new Charcoal Base Cabinets, a Farmhouse grey Kohler sink, all new appliances and all new lighting placement. But the real delight of this kitchen is the gleaming subway tiles with 3/8” spacing for grey grout, creating a stunningly clean, strong look for a real cook. Great Health Chi. See Before/After Gallery for the dramatic changes.
Kitchen: For a spare modern feeling, we removed the trim around the doorway and windows and tiled right up to the edge. No frou-frou design, just a clean, simple kitchen with a feeling of Truth in Design.
Dining in the Kitchen: We selected a sensuous bare wood table from West Elm and leather Saddle Chairs from cb2. Simple industrial lighting is from Restoration Hardware. Thumbs Up!
A Romantic Intention: With low ceilings and highly configured architecture with dormers, I decided to bite the bullet and wallpaper EVERY surface! He chose this gorgeous romantic paper of flower garlands by Osborne&Little, Rhodora. We installed brass sconces to go with the metallic wallpaper and a Canopy Bed with all-white bedding for contrast with the wallpaper. See Before/After Gallery for this dramatic transformation.
Master Bath: See the magic of wall-to-wall mirror! We are looking into the Shower through a Glass wall. See the Cubby for shampoos? And another Cubby near the sink? Note the handy towel bars on the Polished Chrome Washstand. Great Health Chi.
Shower Stall: with Smaller Square Carrara Marble tiles on the 5’ wall. I like this floor drain, rather that a circular drain that dips down in the middle of the floor where one stands. Every Thing Matters!
Julie has been apprenticing with me and recently relocated to Kentucky. Her Great Room is in process: We created a Power Position at the Kitchen cooking station, by placing 5 Matching Mirrors on the Dining Area wall, that allow her to view the Front Door, Mouth of Chi, while preparing meals. The Mouth of Chi is the Career Gua, where Chi enters the Home from the World Outside. Feel the Balance between the Circular Dripping (Water Chi) Chandelier and the Circular (Wood Chi) Dining Table. See Information about Apprentices under - About Jackie.
Newly Remodeled Kitchen: Granite extends Up and Around the Windows, where we removed the wood window frame. The Lighting, previously centered over the Island, has been redesigned to embrace a larger area. See Before/After Gallery for more photos.
The Parlor: the Pink Chair in the Power Position is surrounded by Messages of Love and Peace. This seat is irresistible. We are looking forward to Jim Thompson’s Byzance charcoal colored wallpaper - can you feel how cuddly that will be - perfect Relationship Chi!
The Parlor: A Major Understanding in Feng Shui is that Every Thing Contains A Message. The reupholstered Blue Velvet Chair is Surrounded by Messages of Joy and Peace. Mirrors reflect joyful objects and keep the Chi circulating. Imagine that wall without a mirror. Feel the strength in the petrified wood stump by the softness of the velvet chair. The tv is hidden in the antique armoire. With Feng Shui Medicine furniture arrangement, you will ideally hide the television so that watching TV becomes intentional and priority is given to Conversation. Always augment Relationship Chi.
Bedroom: We created Restful Chi by covering the wall edge-to-edge with a lovely linen drape (hung from a hospital curtain rod) successfully camouflaging a dormer window. This allowed us to place the bed in the Power Position of the room. The antique mirrored bedside tables maintain the monochromatic quiet feeling while adding a Big Chi Hit. This is Balanced Chi at it’s best!
Foyer: Before remodeling, there was a coat closet where you see the gorgeous mirror and Chinese chest. Now that the energy is unblocked, it flows into the “campfire” seating in the Living Room.
During the remodel we removed the side walls separating the Seating area from the Piano area and added 3 bay windows behind the piano, creating one larger room. See in the Before/After Gallery. Feel how the soft pink swivel chairs anchor the space and form “campfire” seating. Three antique photographs of ancestors form a Health Chi Totem.
We opened the flow of Chi by removing a half-wall separating the Kitchen and the Fireplace Room, which are on 2 floor levels. We selected shiny burgundy cabinets in the remodeled kitchen to flow with the warm colors in the adjoining areas. What a difference! See in Before/After Gallery.
Remodeled Kitchen: I love to design kitchens with color and textures that integrate into the larger space. Here the range faces the eating area - good Feng Shui. When the hostess gets up to stir the pot, she is still in conversation with her guests.
Music Salon: Uplifting Chi that causes an inner sparkle is created with Fabulous colors that envelope the space and intimate Restful Chi is created by the “Campfire” seating arrangement. These energies - Uplifting and Restful - seem like opposites, but both occur in Feng Shui Medicine Living Rooms.
Another gorgeous example of perfect “Campfire” seating, with Danielle O’Connor Akiyama blossoms, Passion Chi, in the Power Position. Why is Campfire Seating so important? Because, relationships suffer in our busy world and this round seating symbolizes people relaxing and relating. And it actually encourages people to sit, relax, relate and get back to what Life is all about - Relationship Chi.
Dining Area of Great Room: He wanted to feel more connected to the Outdoors, so we installed a wall-to-wall Mirror that reflects their luscious patio plants and Doubles the Space - no more cramped feeling. See the Big Chi Hit in the Orange Globes of the Chandelier!
Living Room Space: colors of Nature in the “campfire” seating area magnetically draw you to sit and relax. Creating relaxed “campfire” seating is important in our current on-the-go culture.
Great Room: many new condominiums are designed with a Great Room plan, where the Living Room and Dining Room share energy with the Kitchen. I like to pull the Living Room energy into the Kitchen wherever I can. The ethnic plate collection here marries the Living space to the Kitchen space. The sofa rounds out the “Campfire” seating in rich Blues and Greens, reflecting their love of Nature.
TV Room: Wallpapering the wall opposite the Entrance creates a Feng Shui Mountain. This one with a mantra of rising arches that seem to be breathing, creates very Relaxing Chi. Wallpaper should be used to deliver a Message that furthers Love, Relaxation and Empowerment. The right wallpaper is not just beautiful for clients, but powerfully motivating.
Her Office: Ethnic accents, linear wallpaper and wall railings displaying family photos create a feeling of relaxation and organization. Repetition in design helps keep things organized. Feel the repetition in the shapes on the rug and wallpaper. The wallpaper is opposite the Entrance, creating a Feng Shui Mountain, meaning it backs up and supports the entire room. Feel how it draws you into the room. That is the feeling of uplifting Chi.
This Feng Shui design that beckons friends to gather, began as an empty white box and finishes with the feeling of a Mandala - a circular design anchored by a strong central point, the circular “candles” Chandelier from Restoration Hardware. Art and seating create the perfect “Campfire” seating. Note the beautiful repetition of arches with the circular chandelier; it’s almost smiling.
Foyer: She loves Rich Blue colors and has a large art collection, so we made the Cobalt Blue come Alive in her large Great Room! Feel the power in that ceiling! Great Passion Chi! The long Foyer rug directs the movement toward the Seating area of the Great Room. The strength of the wall art keeps the Chi from spilling down to the lower level.
Great Room: Cobalt Blue marks the Dining Area. Touches of Cobalt throughout the Great Room keep the design cohesive. Cobalt (Water Element) balances the high vaulted Ceilings (Fire Element). Without the rich cobalt color the ceiling would seem to float away and discourage lingering conversation. Cobalt anchors the Great Room - very good Feng Shui Medicine!
“Campfire Seating” is anchored by 2 Oriental Rugs butted together. Coral Velvet Chairs are color Magic in this Cobalt and soft yellow Great Room.
When the walls go UP, the art goes UP, keeping the Chi flowing in all directions. This is what Power chi looks like, Up-Up-Up.
Condominium dwellers - from the 3rd floor and up - need to be reconnected to Earth Chi and Nature. Here the lovely cocoa brown creates Earth Chi and grounds the space.
Great Room: The curved fuchsia suede sofa rests in the Power Point and embraces the whole Great Room. Reds, Fuchsias, Blues, Yellows and Orange are tamed by adding White to the mix: White Flokati rug, White pedestal table, White dining chairs and White blossoms in the dynamic Akiyama art.
During the Remodel we removed headers in the ceiling of Living Room, creating a contiguous ceiling and one stand-alone wall, where we splashed out with Apples! Exuberant Joy and Health Chi! This was the start of joining the gym and becoming their ideal weight.
Analyze this: What creates this Upbeat Room? - Everything! The orange sofa, 3 orange framed mirrors that circulate the Chi, an ethnic rug (we used 2 rugs, butting them together to cover a long room) and a passionate Blue Blossom painting by Danielle O/Connor Akiyama.
Story: When my daughter came home for 2000 Christmas to interview me as her possible Feng Shui teacher, this is the home we visited and worked on. Before that visit she had no idea who I was in the World, other than mom. And so began a new dimension in our relationship where for two years we were Mother/Daughter and Teacher/Student, a very rewarding time for both of us. Our daughters are learning from us their whole lives and now she carries the legacy of Feng Shui Medicine in the Berkshires-New York area. See Apprentices in About Jackie
Kitchen and Dining: Sparkling Chi Hits everywhere in this beautiful Kitchen, with Neff piano finish cherry cabinets against a magenta background and modern Wall Art in the Dining Room. In the foreground is zen clay art, “Stirring the Pot” by David Bryce.
Modern Kitchen with a Big Chi Hit: She is an artist and loves this fresh sprout color in her kitchen. The cabinet doors flip up. The range top faces the Dining Table, Good Feng Shui Medicine.
Yogic Kitchen: You can sense her connection with Nature in the rough cut Farmhouse sink from Stone Forest. The wood in the Custom Walnut Cabinets is from a family farm in Northern Wisconsin. She hand cut the long strips of stone used in the backsplash. Pottery is on display in the spindled shelving. Ahhh, you can feel the Chi of a yogic breath.
Kitchen: This is an old brick Victorian home with lots of architectural character. To create space for this serene enlarged Kitchen, we removed some walls and added windows with a view of the back yard. With appreciation for the Victorian character, we designed Custom cabinets in old-fashioned Beadboard, Soapstone counter and Soapstone Farmhouse Sink. Green Glass Handles and Knobs and a glowing touch of pale green on the low ceiling flow with her collection of green pottery. You can feel in your body when something is very High Chi and this is it!
Victorian Home Kitchen: The Chi in everything is in relationship to the Chi in everything. Note the harmony of the hand rubbed detailing on these Custom Cabinets and the purity of the Green Glass Handles. Feng Shui Medicine is intuitive; you can feel design perfection in your body.
Kitchen Flooring: We splashed out on these Ann Sacks St Germain stone tiles for a grounded cohesive flow. With bare feet you can feel the energy of this old stone. We are also feeling the energy of the Control Cycle, Metal-chops-Wood, so beautiful and wonderful Health Chi.
Foyer, Dining and Kitchen: The overhead beam joins an Old House and a Newer House, which had uneven flooring at the joint and a small opening between the two areas. We creatively transformed the two spaces into one, by pulling down the walls, leveling the floors and joining the spaces seamlessly with beautiful floor-to-ceiling walnut pantry storage and service counter for the Dining area. See this amazing transformation in Before/After Gallery.
Dining, Kitchen and Foyer: The Custom floor-to-ceiing-Wallnut cabinetry sparkles with mosaic tiles that relate to the Kitchen area. She sourced an antique Italian marble table for the Dining area and we anchored it with a Twig and Crystal Chandelier from Pottery Barn. Being tree lovers, this Twig Chandelier was a Big Chi Hit.
Kitchen, Dining and Foyer: We kept some of the older cabinets and added new ones, while smoothing out the lines; the base cabinet extension was on a diagonal, (see Before/After Gallery). New ceramic travertine style flooring throughout the large space helps create one large area, and new lighting and mosaic tile to the ceiling add fresh Chi Hits.
Kitchen: We opened this wall to join the Kitchen with the Living and Dining Areas, created the bar extension with 3 pendants and added the 3 windows - a beautiful renovation that seemed to add square footage to the area. Imagine the blocked energy of a solid wall with a narrow 36” passage into the kitchen. The Window wall over the sink had upper cabinets and a small window. Removing the wall and the addition of 3 windows made the entire space flow. Now the cook faces those seated at the bar, great Feng Shui placement. The cutout extends the Kitchen view, while the post maintains the structural integrity.
We placed 2 hammered copper sinks under the window and mirrored the walls on both sides. How would you like to brush your teeth gazing at Nature every morning! It feels spacious and beautiful!
Beautiful olive Marble tiles meet olive Glass tiles. The spare modern stand on chrome legs, the chrome vessel and sleek pendants create an Old/New balance with the antique mirror and hall tree, behind the glass brick wall - a perfect Wabi-Sabi blend of Old Chi and New Chi.
We designed this bedroom, in an older building (see the exposed brick wall), for a loving relationship. Feel the balanced energy and the sets of twos, expressing equality. The cuddling puppies express a True Heart’s Desire for Loving Trusting Partners.
Here is Relationship Chi in spades: Count the things that occur in 2s. The powerful symmetry, symbolizing a balanced relationship and the restful deep cobalt wall suggest harmonious Relationship Chi.
What might be an Uphill Climb after a day’s work when we may be tired, is transform by bright color and a mobile. This stairway ascends from the Garage/Laundry lowest level to the Main Level - the Great Room floor. We often enter our homes through our Garage, rather than the beautiful Mouth of Chi, the Main Entrance, neglecting our personal experience of coming Home. In Feng Shui Medicine, we create an Uplifting Chi path from our Garage to our Main Living space. Mobile are wonderful, gently turning with slightest breeze, keeping the Chi flowing in your home and attitude.
When designing Lower Levels Feng Shui Medicine takes the color up to 50% more Chi than the Main Levels. That causes a sparkle when you think of going downstairs. If we designed with the same Chi frequency as the Main Level, the Lower Level would never be used, because our bodies naturally move to where the Chi is greater.
This is text that Jackie is going to write about the Hahn cliffhouse.
Tall narrow spaced vertical floor-to-ceiling windows offset the long horizontal shape of the Crescent perimeter. The minimalist cable railing around the perimeter allows for less visual interference.
This is some test test
The bold Schumacher “Hand of Fatima” pattern on the back pillows is the dominant fabric and represents the feminine aspect, while the linear fabrics by Osborne & Little represent the masculine aspect.

Opposite the Front Double Doors in our Feng Shui Home, is our Spiritual Template. Upon entering we feel Messages of Devotion (the Tibetan Thangka, over the kitchen door) Relationship (the black lacquer Chinese Screen with birds in pairs) and Career-and-Wealth (10 Mirrors - Water Element for Wealth Chi - which reflect the Career Gua located at the Front Door). I install Spiritual Templates near the Entrance to client’s homes as a reminder of Life’s purpose, unique to each home.
This was a treat to work on, with the art climbing higher and higher, lifting the Chi to the height of the upper windows. The dramatic earth brown color on the wall accentuates the art and forms a yin-yang balance with the wall of windows. The convex sunburst mirror, centered over the fireplace acts as a balance point between 2 ceiling heights. We twisted the oriental rugs and butted them together to form one big patchwork on the floor. This is a lesson in color: feel how the fuchsia and reds are pulled together by the brown wall. The collie is lovin’ it!
The best Living Rooms combine Restful Chi and Alert Chi. The Alert Uplifting Chi is in the Wall Art hung in a random pattern on richly colored brown walls and the diagonally placed grouping of rugs. The Restful Chi is in the circular “campfire” seating arrangement. That fabulous Pig sculpture (by Bruce Howdle) adds Fire Element to the room and joins in the conversation.
First, I select the best wall for a large grouping of Art. This may be in the Power Point of a room or at the Entrance, if I am creating a Spiritual Template, like this one. Large groupings act as wallpaper, enlivening an empty wall. Art is also beautiful when placed directly ON a wallpapered wall. In preparation for a large grouping of Wall Art, I first measure the wall. With blue painters tape, I map out a section on the floor. Then I place the dominant picture first and finish by surrounding it with smaller art. Sometimes, as in this grouping, it works well to create some straight lines with the frame edges.
We gathered her lovely Old World Paintings into one group, rather than dilute the energy by spreading them around and created a compelling vision of a wholesome world. This is a powerful message that can actually change the way you breathe, bringing inner peace.
My Naturopath's Office: Wall Art of vegetable photos – taken at the Farmer’s Market – is arranged in lines of 5 (for Health Chi), and becomes a Wellness Message to suggest natural foods for her clients, an inspiring Message of Health Chi. The frames are spaced 1” apart, creating a wallpapered effect.
Ukrainian Art Treasures: Rather than spreading small collectables around the room, we gathered them together and created a powerful singular focal point. Here we grouped their collection of gorgeous hand-painted Ukrainian Eggs on a long wooden shelf and encircled them with other Ukrainian art treasures. We custom built a wooden shelf for a sculpture - an old man playing a Ukrainian Bandura. This display of beautiful ancestral history extends up and over the door, enhancing the trip to the water jug, visited many times daily.
A strong belief in the Goodness of Earth inspired this collection of Urban and Rural Life, restoring Inner Peace in a busy world. When we amass an art collection we create a stronger message that inspires and uplifts our daily lives.
We covered this Lower Level Gallery Wall, celebrating children’s art, keepsakes, posters and family photos is an inspired mixture that celebrates their Lives. Because this is a Lower Level we chose a sassy chartreuse as a background for their personal treasures. Intense color is needed to Lift the Chi frequency to match the more subtle colors used on the Upper Levels.
We selected art that represents all of the family members: Daughters strolling at the beach, Father feeling his inner power and beauty, Mother taking time for herself. These personal messages transform our beliefs about ourselves, changing the direction of our lives.
She is a shaman. Her sacred treasures are displayed on a wood shelf over the sofa, creating a powerful “Campfire” seating area grounded with a beautiful square ethnic rug. We hung a her totem in the adjacent room, visible from the Front Door. There is Power Chi in the Fire and Earth energy everywhere!
We gathered their meaningful treasures — old and new, tacky and ornate — and created an expressive story of their journey together. Here the small antique doll perched on a highchair is talking to the snowman in front of a Dali print. It is a joyful conversation area for Dining guests.
Wallpaper is all the more beautiful with art; here Tibetan Thangkas are serene on Jim Thompson tonal wallpaper. Don’t be afraid to place art over the wallpaper. This is luscious!
Our Guest Room is also our Meditation Room where we hung Tibetan Thangkas on beautiful wallpaper. The over-the-top beauty gives the room a very cozy-cuddly feeling.
Feel the earthy delight in this Guest Room! Richly veined custom floor-to-ceiling Walnut closet doors cover the entire wall, adding a beautiful Wood Element to the room while concealing storage. The routed grooves serve as handles.
Celebrating Family: By adding narrow shelving to the back of the TV cabinet we created a Family Gallery that we pass all the time. Pulling all of the family photos into one spot is a dynamic way to celebrate our families.
I first arrange the photos on the Floor around a central photo that celebrates ancestral heritage. Forming a Mandala design, which radiates from a central focus, I place the oldest member of the family in the center and move out with smaller photos, forming a lineage. When it is fully formed with balanced spacing on the floor, we move it to the Wall. This is very good Health Chi.
EVERYTHING CAUSES A THOUGHT. Choose carefully the thoughts, Messages, you are imbedding in a space, for that becomes your Future. Feng Shui Medicine uses wallpaper design to create healing Messages. Here Monkeys and Pomegranates are a Mantra for playfulness.
Don't Forget the often overlooked Laundry Room! These Red Apple exude Joy in a utility area. Cheerful chi! Beautiful reclaimed wood Barn Doors conceal storage.
Plaid Wallpapered Ceiling, Yang energy, creates strong linear Wealth Chi overhead and balances the Blue Chicken Wallpaper, Yin energy. The 2 wallpapers flow beautifully separated by a strong line of 12” custom crown molding. Because we had beautiful high ceilings, we created 3 different plaid ceilings in this Rural Wisconsin Home. See Interior Environments Gallery.
A Mantra is a inner message that one repeats and repeats to create a desired feeling. This beautiful wallpaper design rising in golden archs suggests slow even breaths and a balanced, peaceful mind with great strength. Can you feel how wallpaper is Feng Shui Medicine?
I hunted for the perfect mural to create a Chiful vibrant atmosphere, inspiring the girls to bask in visions of a happy playful world. To help the overall design we ordered the mural “reversed” as you see in the corner. The bright orange wall-to-wall short nap nylon carpeting is Masland Keystone. All-white bedding and shared Floor-to-Ceiling white Bookshelf (from cb2) create a feeling of intimacy in their garden oasis.
For this Guest Room is on the Lower Level of the home, I selected a Chi Upper - foil wallpaper - creating a glamorous nature environment. The glitzy Chi Upper helps to offset the Chi Downer that occurs on any Lower Level.
This is a rescued basement: We used a mural of Tuscan sunflower fields and clear skies to wrap this room in Nature, installed mirrors that resemble windows and Voila! - we almost feel transported to the hillsides of Italy! The Basement is transformed to a garden where she consults with children. Cheerful Relaxing Chi!
TV Theater Room: Vibrant Chiful Color! These beautiful colors resolve the problem of creatively using Lower Levels, which always have Lower Chi than Upper Levels. Removing a partial wall, adding a slim attractive railing, painting the Ceiling - all help to move the Chi into a relaxing magnetic TV Theater room.
Sensual Natural Textures: Gorgeous Acid Yellow Phillip Jeffries Hemp Wallpaper and Large Capiz Shell Chandelier. See 50s Zen Style Home in Interior Environments Gallery
A dreamy Master Bedroom: This is a 50’s Ranch home with typical small high windows, cured with white gauze floor-to-ceiling drapes. This room seems to float on a cloud, very good Relationship Chi. Beautiful Brass Bed and Brass Sconces are from cb2.
She knew she wanted Old World Charm and consulted with me for Feng Shui Medicine. We hired a Stone Shaman to do the walls that look centuries old. This is a perfect meeting of Old Chi and New Chi - Rooster Painting is a Big Chi Hit
Beautifully flowing colors! These lovely violet walls would be so lonely with a white ceiling.
We blended 2 Joyful sunshine colors with this lovely brass pendant and painted the woodwork a muted sandy color creating a smooth transition. Can you imagine how white woodwork would miss the mark? Paint the woodwork!
Hold the Line! Tiled in Glass Turquoise, the grid of tiles stands strong because of the Edges. Knowing when to Stop creates strength in simplicity. The flowing White Slipper tub silhouette against the refined glistening small tiles becomes art! Note the center placement of the beautifully designed linear tub faucet. Selecting the final Chiful touches is like writing a symphony – Every Choice Matters! Kohler faucet.
Lower Level Bathroom: These beautifully tiled walls are the Entrance to a Bathroom on a Lower Level, where they have a Movie Theater, a Bar and a Workout Space. A Big Chi Hit is created with a Red Glass Tiled curved wall - the exterior wall of the shower in the 3/4 Bathroom. Because Lower Levels naturally have less Chi, they will be used less frequently. In Feng Shui Medicine we cure this by using color with more Chi.
Feel the restfulness in this combination of materials and horizontal-vertical balance. This gorgeous selenite double sconce mounted on natural Carrara marble mosaic is Feng Shui Medicine for the clients.
This is a very small 3/4 bath tiled throughout with simple white 4” tiles. But Not The Floor! We designed the 1” square tiles to fit the perimeter of the room and extended the “rug” border up the walls for 1’, visually expanding the space
Create small spaces filled with delight and feel the inner smiles of Love and Life bloom in your Heart!
Create every design with intention. With Feng Shui Medicine we create a guide to your Future. If your life is exactly the way you dreamed it would be, reinforce those messages. If something is missing, demonstrate the intention to create it through design. Every Choice Matters.
How would you feel seeing this message several times a day? —Butterflies Flying Freely, sometimes in pairs, with a stone Indian statue of Ganesh. This gorgeous stone inlay table top was purchased at Burnie’s Rock Shop; we placed it on a short metal drink table.
Symbols of a joyful relationship affect Your relationship. Your intention to dance lightheartedly through Life becomes the way you Live.
Personal Treasures: We placed figurines gathered in conversation against a wall of ethnic treasures. These represent the gatherings they regularly host in their home. She had a joyful spirit as I intuitively created these little vignettes. Groupings of treasured items lift everyone’s Chi.
A Joyful Roadrunner flirting with an elusive glass Hummingbird, and Fruit in Pairs are all Messages with Relationship Chi.
Layer your bed beautifully in Pairs of Pillows and connect them. Pillows in sets of 2-4-6 are a Love Message, an Invitation to connect, not 3-5-7-10-13. Don’t be tempted to place a sweet boudoir pillow in the middle
Symbols of Love placed around your home emit Loving Chi, influencing your mood, and result in a more loving relationship.
A Sphere Symbolizes Fullness – of Love, of Life, of whatever you determine. Here a Quartz Crystal Sphere on a corner shelf is a reminder of our True Nature.
Mirrors are a powerful tool of Feng Shui Medicine. I covered the ceiling of this new octagonal Foyer in the Rural Wisconsin Home (Interior Environments Gallery) with mirror to amplify fresh flowing Water energy and balance the abundance of steady Earth energy in this 2 story older brick home.
What Cheerful Chi! The Front Door is the Mouth of Chi - the opening where Chi enters the home from the outside world. This Entrance was cramped, not an invitation for Wealth Chi to enter. To cure the tight feeling, we hung 4 matching mirrors 1” apart, “doubling” the size of the Entrance and inviting abundance. Because we earn our Wealth Chi by relating with the outside world, our Mouth of Chi should be Clean, Bright and Welcoming. Mirrors from cb2.
This is a condominium with windows on one side only. A fabulous 6’ mirror welcomes an abundance of natural light from the windows and reflects the light of the gorgeous 36” Capiz Shell Globe Pendant (Restoration Hardware). You can almost hear these birds singing - Atwitter Wallpaper by Schumacher. The Flokati Rug softens the mood, creating a Happy seating area. 2 brass birds on the fireplace mantle are for Relationship chi.
We pulled in Light and Chi by adding a collection of Antique Mirrors purchased for this Chiful display to a wall adjacent to the Front Windows. In this application Mirrors are more effective for circulating the Chi than wall art.
Happy Chi Everywhere! We twisted the dining table, added 2 30” square mirrors, the fantastic bull art, a colorful corner cabinet and patterned upholstered chairs, found at TJMaxx. This is a joyful home!
In the Dining area of this condominium with low natural light, we filled the walls with 5 matching Moroccan Style Mirrors (for good Health chi), reflecting the gorgeous Branch chandelier. Brass on the Mirror frames and the Branch Chandelier are for Wealth chi. Feng Shui Medicine is UNIQUE to every one. A design is not a formula, it is as original as the person.
4 Matching Mirrors double the space and light and Cure a dead corner – an area where the Chi was not circulating. Now Colors bounce forth with Joy Chi causing the energy in this home office to flow freely. Feel the elegance and joy of beautiful strong colors. Acceptance and Resistance of specific Colors is synchronized with Acceptance and Resistance of their corresponding Feelings. The joyful colors repel low energy feelings and boost Joy Chi. Note the Balance of Old and New objects — antique table and reupholstered antique chair balance the art, garden stool and the Black Rug, grounding the room. Danielle O’Connor Akiyama, Passion Art
We used an antique trip-tic mirror to reflect a treasured Old Philosopher’s Stone we brought home from China. The mirror amplifies the stone’s of Message of Truth and Longevity. Take your time in designing the Small Things, they emit as much Chi as the Large Things. Every Thing Matters!
Honestly, this was the smallest room and without moving the walls, we used Feng Shui Mirror Medicine to dramatically increase the size. Wall-to-wall Mirror with 3 surface mounted lights is pure Mirror Magic - suddenly we have 2 windows! A narrow toilet (Kohler Persuade) and a sliding Barn Door added precious inches and saved the day! All Walls and ceiling are tiled with natural Carrara Marble. The floor is tiled in ceramic. The Polished Chrome Washstand from Restoration Hardware adds an additional towel bar. The sculptural Gooseneck Faucet is elegant in this small room. Please go to Before/After Gallery to enjoy the complete renovation.
If you look carefully, you can see where the mirror begins, creating the illusion that the wall seems to go on forever. We tiled the floor and only 1 wall in honed 4” onyx tiles from The Home Depot. The ceiling and 2 walls are painted and the 4th wall is mirrored. What a beautiful room! The square onyx sink is from Signature Hardware. The vanity is a Custom wall-hung walnut masterpiece. The large flush mount light with a natural linen shade is from Restoration Hardware. This special tile effect is created by butting the tiles together without grout spacing, a seamless design.
I used edge-to-edge mirror in this small bathroom to enlarge the space and reflect a fabulous Granite Vessel from Signature Hardware, mounted on a custom wall-hung vanity. For plenty of storage we installed 3 mirrored medicine cabinets, 1 on the main mirror and 1 at each end of the vanity, creating a serene spa atmosphere that is clutter-free.
E V E R Y T H I N G M A T T E R S! This is a basic Truth of Feng Shui Medicine. There are no exceptions - not rubber bands, rags, cleaning supplies, stored items — there is Chi in Every Thing in the Universe. Prepare your drawers with Beauty and Order like you are expecting God to arrive at any moment.
Treasure your Treasures or let them go. There is Chi in Everything in the Universe - in Everything you own - in You. Choose to own only what Lifts your Chi. Everything else depletes your energy.
Kitchen Counter Angles are rounded to create a flowing design, which eliminated the possibility of hitting your body on a sharp corner. It feels gentle and kind.
Inside corners have the same radius as the outside corners creating flowing Chi in the kitchen design.
My closet is a celebration of Life. Closets are potentially a Chi Trap, meaning energy comes in, cannot circulate and cannot leave, creating clutter and stagnation. The cure? - Mirrors and Light, Mirrors and Light! I carefully designed every square inch so the Chi would flow and things would stay organized. I visually extended the space by adding a floor-to-ceiling mirror on a narrow back wall. We drilled holes in that mirror for large Brass Hooks for hanging jewelry, and Glass Shelves, and a beautiful Venetian Mirror from Wisteria. The Cubbies keep sweaters organized. Yes, I design closets for clients and they love it!
